Wednesday, May 15, 2013: Workshop on: “Improving Access to Modern Energy Services in Mozambique”

Following upon the workshop held as part of the IS-Academy programme RENEW in Amsterdam on Monitoring and Steering of Renewable Energy Programmes in December 2012, a 1-day workshop was organised by ECN and IVM in Maputo on the 7th of May to bring together renewable energy practitioners in Mozambique to gain a deeper understanding of some the issues related to the implementation of energy access projects. More specifically, how can programmes improve access to modern energy services for cooking and household use (electrical appliances) in Mozambique in an effective, efficient and sustainable manner.

The broader aims of the workshop were:
- Networking and information sharing and dialogue.
- Sharing of experiences and identification of key research questions for further research.
- Drawing conclusions based on workshop to improve evidence base on effective practices.

The full report of the workshop can be found here.

A summary report is also available in English and Portuguese.

December 18, 2012: "Monitoring and steering of renewable energy programmes"

The IS Academy RENEW project organised a workshop to present the monitoring and steering methodologies used in the various renewable energy programmes and to critically evaluate the underlying assumptions of these methodologies. The workshop aimed to exchange information and practical experience on monitoring dashboards of different renewable energy programs and to contribute to capturing and sharing lessons learned. Another goal was to assess the need for further information exchange among DGIS Promoting Renewable Energy Programme(PREP) implementing organisations and to discuss how this can best be realised.

The workshop programme comprised of presentations by DGIS and implementing organisations HIVOS/SNV (Domestic biogas programmes in 17 countries), GIZ (EnDev programme in 25 countries) and AgNL (EnDev & DaeyOuwens Fund subsidy to projects in 14 countries) and will discussed more specifically what monitoring indicators can used for steering the implementation of the programme, commonly referred to as the ‘monitoring
dashboard’. Specific topics that were addressed include:
- The type of indicators monitored in their programme (i.e. result, outcome, impact, sustainability);
- The way in which monitoring is conducted;
- The type of mechanism used to guide the implementation of the programme (resultbased finance, other indicators);
- The main tangible results achieved so far and lessons learned through monitoring activities; and
- The need for exchange of monitoring information among the different DGIS
supported programmes.
The workshop also presented some preliminary findings on the development of a Results based financing window in the EnDev programme.

November 9, 2011: "New realities in Energy and Development"
RENEW hosted a workshop describing "New realities in energy and development" at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), VU Amsterdam. The workshop focused on convening the broader Dutch energy and development community to discuss recent issues, challenges, and perspectives in energy access. Approximately 30 energy and development professionals representing the private sector, civil society, policy, and academia contributed to lively discussions throughout the day.

July 5, 2011: "NL Meeting on Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves"

SNV and the Shell Foundation convened a round table discussion of Dutch rural energy practitioners in Den Haag to discuss the recently formed Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an overview of activities currently being driven by NL parties in clean cooking, and explore the potential for future collaboration.

The discussion focused heavily on programmatic carbon finance, though other topics including the need to stimulate market demand,  and further understand the entire cooking energy value chain (including forestry management and feedstocks) were also highlighted. We saw quite a bit of overlap between the research directions in RENEW, and contributed insights gained from fieldwork in Rwanda, Kenya, and Indonesia.

June 1, 2011: "Energy access in Rwanda: Creating sustainable businesses through Technology and Finance Partnerships"

RENEW hosted an energy access practitioner workshop in collaboration with the Royal Embassy of the Netherlands in Kigali. The workshop was attended by over 40 solar and biomass professionals in Rwanda, including entrepreneurs, academics, policy makers, and investors.
Forestry expert Sabin Murererehe explains carbonization techniques being introduced in Rwanda.
The morning session was comprised of eight presentations provided by both Rwandan practitioners and RENEW researchers. Two breakout discussion groups were formed in the afternoon, to discuss questions of technology, strategy, and finance, for promoting entrepreneurship to address energy poverty. The workshop was an important opportunity to facilitate knowledge exchange among like minded professionals, and also enabled RENEW to share insights gained into energy access in Rwanda.

January 25, 2011: "FMO's Commercially Sustainable Rural Energy Workshop"
FMO, the entrepreneurial development bank of the Netherlands, held a rural energy workshop at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss commercialy sustainable interventions in rural energy amongst a network of rural energy practitioners. Presentations were provided by rural energy expert Frank van der Vleuten (ETC Energy), Regional Sales Manager Marieke Heemskerk (Heineken), Manoj Sinha (Husk Power Systems), and Diana Wesselius (FMO).

November 11, 2010: "Energy & Development: Business and Finance models for scaling up clean energy initiatives"
The Knowledge Network (kenniskring) on Sustainability, Climate and Energy, an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, convened a conference to discuss the scaling up of clean energy initiatives in developing countries. Prof.dr. Jos Bruggink provided a keynote presentation describing energy poverty, business models, and potential opportunities for development cooperation.

June 29, 2010: "Workshop: International energy transition strategies"
The Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands, Unit Policy Studies and the  Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) co-organized a technology focused workshop directed towards policymakers. Chaired by Prof.dr. Jos Bruggink, the workshop had two aims: first, to educate policymakers on recent technological developments relevant for a sustainable energy transition, and second, to provide a forum of technology experts with whom policymakers may discuss concrete policy questions. Following an overview of fossil fuel reserves and resources, the workshop provided a survey of developments in sustainable energy technologies including: solar, wind, biomass, nuclear, and CCS.
